Don't Lose Revenue on your 404 Pages, Monetize them
Whenever you are making constant changes to your site it is important to realise that any change in the Search Engines are not instant. So if you change URL's on your pages then the search engines will take a while to update with the new URL's. Even at that, they will still hold your old URL indexed for some time.
What this means is that anyone finding the old URL will recieve a 404 (Page not found) Error.
Why not have a look now & see if there are any pages on your site that are indexed in the Search Engines that you have removed some times ago? use the site:yoururlhere.com command.
What if you could monetize these visitors instead of giving them an error page?
First of all lets rule out Google's Adsense Program , it is specifically against their TOS to place adsense purposely on 404 Error pages.
There are a number of options available:
1. Redirecting the original page to your new content
2. Having a Custom 404 Error Page display.
3. Redirect to the main page of your site (this could be noted as cloaking however).
4. Using 301 directs so that old pages are redirected to new ones.
Remember, even though your visitors are shown a 404 page, they are still reaching your site through old links or old referrers. So they are still targeted to your niche. I find the most effective form of redirection is back to the main section on your site, you can do this with a 301 redirect, which is not permanent.
Another option is using affiliate links on your 404 pages, perhaps remove the 404 page not found error text & replace it with a targeted advert. This is likely to get a high CTR & conversions will depend on your niche.
Remember, 404 pages need not be a burden on making changes to your site.
